
A spokesperson for the Alto Alentejo Sub-Regional Emergency and Civil Protection Command informed the Lusa news agency that the fatal victims were the two drivers involved in the collision. A 40-year-old man drove the light vehicle, while a 31-year-old man operated the goods truck, which caught fire and left him charred.
Both men were trapped in their vehicles, and deaths were confirmed on-site by the Portalegre emergency and resuscitation medical team (VMER), according to the spokesperson.
By around 8:30 PM, traffic on the IP2 at the accident site was halted in both directions, with the alternative route being through Gavião. The truck involved was transporting milk, the spokesperson added.
A source from the GNR stated that normal traffic flow on the IP2 is expected to resume within two hours.
The accident happened at kilometer 161 between Arez and Amieira do Tejo in the Nisa municipality, with the alert raised at 5:02 PM, according to the regional command.
Emergency operations involved 38 personnel, assisted by 12 vehicles, and a helicopter from the National Institute of Medical Emergency (INEM), which was not used.
