A man and a woman were named as suspects on Thursday for the crime of elder abuse in Oliveira de Azeméis, in the district of Aveiro.
“As part of an investigation into elder abuse at an illegal care facility, in collaboration with inspectors from the Investigation Department of the Central Inspection Unit of Social Security in Coimbra, the Guard’s officers carried out various police procedures. These revealed that the institution did not meet housing and sanitary conditions, which led to the removal of six elderly individuals – four women and two men, aged between 61 and 93 years old. They were relocated to a Private Social Solidarity Institution (IPSS),” reads a note sent this Monday.
At the conclusion of the police procedures, the facility was immediately closed. The man is 51 years old and the woman is 46.
The case has been referred to the Judicial Court of Santa Maria da Feira.
