An alert for the fire in Bairro das Morenas, Caldas da Rainha, located in the district of Leiria, was issued at 5:25 PM.
“When the firefighters arrived, the house was already fully engulfed, prompting a search and rescue operation to extract the victims, one at a time,” said Nelson Cruz, adding that “there was nothing to be done for the house, it was completely destroyed.”
In addition to the elderly couple who were left homeless, the fire also resulted in “the death of one dog and injuries to another,” the fire commander confirmed.
The causes of the fire are still unknown.
Eleven firefighters, supported by four vehicles from the Caldas da Rainha fire department, responded to the scene.
