Two Euromillions prizes were won in Portugal. How much will the State receive?

Two Portuguese bettors claimed the second and third prizes in Tuesday’s Euromillions draw, which had a jackpot of 151 million euros. How much does the State (and the players) actually receive?

For the second prize, a lucky bettor with a ticket registered in Portugal won a total of 193,669.03 euros. This means the State will collect 38,733.80 euros, while the winner takes home 154,935 euros.

As for the third prize, amounting to 36,210.91 euros, the State collects 7,242.18 euros. Meanwhile, the player retains 28,968.73 euros.

It is important to note that “prizes exceeding five thousand euros are subject to stamp duty at the legal rate of 20%, as per legislation in force since January 1, 2013.”

And how are the prizes paid?

Since the prize exceeds five thousand euros, the amount will be paid via bank transfer after the winner has been identified.

Prizes are paid under the following conditions:

  • Equal to or less than 150.00 euros: at agents or at the Gaming Department (DJ) premises;
  • More than 150.00 euros and less than 2,000.00 euros: by bank transfer at agents or at the DJ premises;
  • Equal to or more than 2,000.00 euros and less than 5,000.00 euros: by bank transfer, after in-person identification at agents or at the DJ premises;
  • Equal to or more than 5,000.00 euros: by bank transfer, 12 days after in-person identification at the DJ premises.

The personal identification data of winners is collected for compliance with anti-money laundering legislation and is processed by Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Lisboa, in accordance with data protection laws,” the organization warns.

The bettor must complete a form in the ‘Receive My Prizes’ area on the website and then go to the DJ for identification and prize collection. For this purpose, the bettor should present the winning receipt, a valid ID, the NIB, and proof of ownership of a bank account in Portugal.

It should also be noted that the “right to prizes expires 90 days after the date of the respective draw.”
