Two officers of the Republican National Guard (GNR) were arrested by their own unit in Tavira on Wednesday, on suspicion of various crimes.
The officers, aged 23 and 25, are suspected of approaching citizens belonging to minorities, “contrary to legal requirements, allegedly intending to extort money, abusing authority and, in some cases, using excessive force”.
In a statement, the Faro Territorial Command also indicated that the operation was the result of a prior internal investigation, which detected serious misconduct immediately reported to the Public Prosecutor’s Office.
The two officers will be presented to the Faro Judicial Court for an initial interrogation and the application of appropriate preventive measures.
In the same statement, the Republican National Guard reiterated “absolute intolerance towards any act or omission that may harm police ethics or violate institutional principles and values, maintaining a firm commitment to act with the utmost determination, rigor, and transparency, especially in this case, where their own officers are the alleged perpetrators of criminal activity”.
