The National Republican Guard (GNR) arrested two men, aged 42 and 55, on Tuesday, October 7, and seized 1,572,000 doses of hashish at the Guadiana River, in the locality of Pomarão, in the municipality of Mértola.
Military officials stated in a press release that the operation followed a police action that detected “suspicious activity” in the riverside area of the locality, which led to the approach and brief search of a vessel.
As a result, 786 kg of hashish, equivalent to over 1.5 million doses, the vessel in question, three mobile phones, a laptop, a tablet, and various communication equipment were confiscated.
According to the GNR’s statement, the detainees remain in custody. They will appear for their initial judicial hearing on October 8 at the Judicial Court of Beja, where appropriate precautionary measures will be determined.
The operation also involved support from the Technical Support Unit of Beja, the Territorial Detachment of Almodôvar and Moura, and the Criminal Investigation Unit of Almodôvar.
On social media, the GNR shared a video showing the quantity of drugs seized. The video displays dozens of packaged crates, within which the narcotics were hidden.
