Two Portuguese died and one was injured in Tuesday night’s bus accident in the Venice region, in northeastern Italy, which caused 21 deaths, a source from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs told Lusa today.
“It is confirmed that two Portuguese citizens died and one was injured following a bus accident in the city of Venice,” said an official Portuguese diplomatic source.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs also stressed that it “regrets what happened and, through the Portuguese Embassy in Rome, is monitoring the situation”.
According to the Italian media, the mayor of Venice announced late today the nationality of all the victims of the bus crash: nine Ukrainians, four Romanians, three Germans, two Portuguese, one Italian [the driver], one Croat, and one South African.
The Venice authorities today asked the Italian government to decree three days of mourning in the region for the death of 21 people in a bus that fell off a viaduct.
In addition to the 21 confirmed dead, there are at least 15 injured.
The bus passengers were mostly young foreign tourists returning to Venice from a nearby campsite.
The vehicle was an electric bus that caught fire after falling from a height of around 15 meters, knocking down the protection of the viaduct.
