
Two women, aged 84 and 88, died following a “serious accident” that occurred on Friday afternoon in the parish of Vila Garcia, Aboim, and Chapa, in the municipality of Amarante, confirmed the National Republican Guard (GNR).
The “serious accident, followed by overturning,” also resulted in a serious injury to an 83-year-old man, who was transported to Penafiel Hospital. The victims were all in the same vehicle.
The alert was raised at 16:05, and besides the GNR, Amarante Volunteer Firefighters and the Penafiel Medical Emergency and Resuscitation Vehicle (VMER) were present at the scene.
The GNR is overseeing the incident and is investigating the cause of the accident.
The fatalities were two sisters from Amarante, and the driver was the husband of one of the sisters. The accident happened after the driver failed to negotiate a curve, reported the Jornal de Notícias.
Following the accident, the vehicle “came straight down a slope approximately 25 meters long” and eventually fell from a height of five meters.
Authorities have not ruled out the possibility of the driver suffering a sudden health issue.
