Two Spaniards among the injured in the derailment of the Glória elevator

“The Portuguese authorities have just informed us that two Spanish citizens are among the injured,” diplomatic sources in Madrid revealed to EFE.

“The Spanish Consulate in Lisbon is in constant contact with the Portuguese authorities,” and for the moment, the possibility of any Spanish citizen dying has been ruled out, the same sources stated.

So far, the Portuguese authorities have not confirmed the nationality of the deceased or specified the causes of the funicular derailment, which crashed violently into a building on a curve.

The Glória funicular in Lisbon derailed on Wednesday at 18:04, on Calçada da Glória.

The INEM announced that the accident caused 15 deaths and 18 injuries, with five in serious condition and 13 suffering minor injuries.

The government has declared a national day of mourning for Thursday.

The Glória funicular is operated by Carris and connects the Restauradores to the São Pedro de Alcântara Garden in Bairro Alto, covering a distance of about 265 meters. It is a popular attraction among tourists.
