
Two women died on Saturday after being hit by a train at an unguarded crossing near Barqueiros station in Mesão Frio.
The victims, both Canadian nationals, were aged 63 and 66, as confirmed by Fernando Pinto, the deputy commander of the Mesão Frio Volunteer Firefighters.
The incident alert was received at 11:10 a.m.
Rail traffic has been halted with no current estimate for resumption.
Personnel from the Mesão Frio Volunteer Firefighters, along with the National Republican Guard (GNR) and the Judiciary Police (PJ), are present at the scene.
As of 1:29 p.m., there were 10 operatives and five vehicles on site, according to the Civil Protection Authority.
