UGT expresses “deep consternation” and pays tribute to the brakeman

“To the families of the victims and all those who suffer, directly or indirectly, from this irreparable loss, we extend our sincerest condolences, reaffirming our solidarity and expressing the desire for a quick and full recovery for all the injured,” the UGT stated in a communiqué.

Expressing its “deepest condolences for all the lost lives,” the union central also pays tribute to brake operator André Marques, a member of the Transport Workers Union (SITRA), one of the UGT-affiliated organizations, who died while on duty.

“To his family, friends, and colleagues, we offer words of profound sorrow and solidarity in this moment of irreplaceable grief,” it stated.

In the communiqué, UGT also acknowledges and commends “the effort, promptness, and dedication of all entities and professionals involved in the relief operations” for the victims of the accident.

The Glória elevator in Lisbon derailed on Wednesday, resulting in 17 deaths and 21 injuries among Portuguese and foreigners of various nationalities.

Among the 17 deceased, 15 were confirmed at the scene of the accident, and two died in the hospitals to which they had been transported.

The Government declared a national day of mourning on Thursday.

The Glória elevator, managed by Carris, connects the Restauradores to the São Pedro de Alcântara Garden in Bairro Alto along a route of about 265 meters and is a popular attraction for tourists.
