UHF set ‘Racehorses’ racing across the country 45 years ago.

The UHF band released one of their greatest hits, ‘Cavalos de Corrida,’ exactly 45 years ago, on October 16, 1980.

The song quickly topped the national sales charts as the band’s first single and their second recording, following their debut with ‘Jorge Morreu.’

Originating from Almada, UHF drove ‘Cavalos de Corrida’ across the country even before it reached stores, in a year marked by 81 concerts that helped solidify the new wave of Portuguese rock.

The song, still hummed by various generations today, earned the band the first silver record for rock music produced in Portugal.

In a statement sent to Notícias ao Minuto, the group reveals that ‘Cavalos de Corrida’ has at least seven versions, some of which were recorded live:

  1. Original release – 1980
  2. Rough mix (Os Anos VC) – 1982
  3. Live with the original band (live – July 13) – 1990
  4. Re-recording with Renato Gomes (studio) – 2001
  5. Piano and vox (live) – 2011
  6. Live in Ovar (reggae) during the pandemic – 2021
  7. With 205 musicians – Europarque live – 2024

The band also reminds that the author of the lyrics is António Manuel Ribeiro and the composer is Renato Gomes.

In total, UHF has released 406 songs, 18 studio albums, 11 live albums, and 25 compilations. The band has won two platinum records, eight gold records, and 13 silver records, with total sales reaching 387,558 albums.

For the eighth consecutive year, UHF will conclude their tour at the Casa da Música in Porto on December 26.

The concert in Porto will be the 1,919th of the band’s career — a remarkable milestone celebrating nearly five decades of presence and resilience in Portuguese rock music.
