Ukraine. Approved funding “is part of the 221.6 million euros” from 2025

The remarks were made today by António Leitão Amaro, Portugal’s Minister of the Presidency, following the Council of Ministers meeting, after Prime Minister Luís Montenegro announced in Paris that Portugal had approved a spending authorization of up to “205 million euros for military support to Ukraine.”

“Portugal stands with Ukraine, and is committed to supporting Ukraine’s defense. We must also make a financial effort within the context of European commitments and our alliances to support Ukraine’s efforts,” reiterated Leitão Amaro.

The minister stated that these 205 million euros are “part of the 221.6 million euros” that Portugal, as pledged for the year 2025, will support Ukraine. This is in addition to the 227 million euros that Portugal invested in the year 2024.

“The resolution of the Council of Ministers approves the total amount, delegating then to the ministers, particularly the Minister of Defense, the allocation among various components,” he explained.

When asked to specify how the funds might be spent, the minister provided examples: “Costs involved with the preparation and transport of donated equipment, ammunition, care for the injured, acquisition of uniforms, individual protective gear, and contribution to joint initiatives for purchasing equipment, including aerial, maritime, armored vehicles, information technologies, drones, and participation in the so-called International Fund for Ukraine,” he said.

“This is a comprehensive budget, which will be assigned to various equipment and support components, managed throughout the year. Its specific allocation will be handled by the Minister of Defense, in coordination with allied partners,” he added.
