A 60-year-old Ukrainian national was rescued from a merchant ship by the Portuguese Navy on Friday night due to “symptoms of appendicitis.”
In a statement, the Navy reported that the ship contacted the Lisbon Maritime Search and Rescue Coordination Center (MRCC) and the captain informed that one of the crew members was experiencing “symptoms of appendicitis.”
The ship was navigating 60 nautical miles, approximately 111 kilometers, south of Lisbon at the time.
“After the condition of the patient was assessed by the Emergency Patients Observation Center (CODUMAR), an urgent medical rescue was determined,” the statement read.
The rescue involved collaboration with the Air Force, which deployed an EH-101 helicopter, and subsequently, the patient was transported by INEM to a hospital.
