ULS Médio Tejo invests 2.4 million euros in robotic surgery

The new equipment will be installed at the Hospital of Tomar and is “designed for minimally invasive surgeries” in the fields of Urology, Gynecology, and General Surgery, stated Casimiro Ramos, chairman of the Board of Directors of ULS, in an official statement.

The high-precision robotic platform includes a control console, four independent robotic arms, and 3D visualization technology, offering “greater safety, precision, and reduced recovery times,” according to ULS Médio Tejo, based in Torres Novas, Santarém district, which made the public announcement during the ceremony marking the 40th anniversary of the Hospital of Abrantes.

“What was a dream two years ago is now a reality,” said Ramos, highlighting the significance of the investment for the population in their area and the potential to attract specialized professionals.

“The acquisition of this highly distinctive equipment, valued at 2.4 million euros, was only possible thanks to government support through the PRR and represents a decisive step in attracting specialized professionals and providing more qualified healthcare to our users,” he declared.

ULS stated that the introduction of robotic surgery will be accompanied by specialized training for medical and nursing teams, ensuring “complete team training and the progressive expansion of this technology across different specialties.”

On the 40th anniversary of the Hospital of Abrantes, Casimiro Ramos emphasized that this acquisition is part of a global strategy of modernization and technological enhancement of the three hospitals in the region: Abrantes, Tomar, and Torres Novas.

In recent years, ULS Médio Tejo reports having invested over 9 million euros in structural and technological improvements, including the installation of a new MRI in Abrantes, energy upgrading with photovoltaic panels, water network renewal, and the modernization of the External Consultation and Emergency Medical-Surgical facilities at the Hospital Dr. Manoel Constâncio, in a strategy based on the “complementarity” of the three units.

“The Hospital of Abrantes is the primary response to critically ill patients in emergency and urgency situations; the Hospital of Tomar is affirmed as a Center of Surgical Excellence; and the Hospital of Torres Novas as a Clinical Reference Center dedicated to specialist consultations and outpatient surgery,” Ramos stated.

The chairman of ULS Médio Tejo added that this complementarity “reinforces the cohesion and response capability of the institution” and that the investment in cutting-edge technology also represents a “commitment to valuing professionals and gaining the trust of populations,” in an “integrated hospital modernization strategy.”

“This historic investment positions the institution at the forefront of medical innovation in Portugal and reinforces its mission to provide more precise, efficient, and humane care to the population of the eleven municipalities served,” the statement reads.

ULS Médio Tejo directly serves approximately 169,270 users from the municipalities of Abrantes, Alcanena, Constância, Entroncamento, Ferreira do Zêzere, Mação, Sardoal, Tomar, Torres Novas, Vila Nova da Barquinha, and Vila de Rei, municipalities in the districts of Santarém and Castelo Branco.

With 35 primary healthcare functional units, the structure also has three hospitals—in Abrantes, Tomar, and Torres Novas—located about 30 kilometers apart from each other.
