ULS of Coimbra surpassed 100 robotic surgeries in orthopedics

“Since the beginning of the implementation of this advanced technology, we have dedicated efforts to offer our patients more precise, less invasive procedures with faster recovery,” highlighted Fernando Fonseca, director of the Orthopedic Service, in a statement.

The specialist emphasized that robotic surgery, initiated in July, “has revolutionized” how surgical interventions are performed, “allowing for greater precision, fewer risks of complications, and better results.”

“During this time, it has been possible to perform innovative surgeries nationally and internationally,” he noted.

The ULS of Coimbra further announced that, on Friday, the surgical team proceeded with the bilateral implantation of knee prostheses via robotics (carried out for the first time in the country), “a procedure conducted under special and infrequent circumstances.”

According to the entity, the bilateral prosthesis surgery, performed through robotics, “represents not only a medical advancement but also an opportunity for complete transformation in clinical approach and patient experience.”

The precision of robotic technique allows for less surgical aggression, quicker recovery, and less pain in the rehabilitation process.

This surgery was conducted by the following team: Fernando Fonseca and Diana Bicas (Orthopedic specialists); Margarida Pereira (Anesthesiology specialist); and Ricardo Branco, Ana Ferreira, and Catarina Antunes (nurses).

For Alexandre Lourenço, president of the board of directors, “this technological advancement demonstrates ULS of Coimbra’s commitment to developing responses at the General Hospital as a cutting-edge health unit of modern medicine, in the pursuit of the best solutions for the health of our patients.”

“The completion of the 100th robotic surgery in Orthopedics reinforces ULS of Coimbra’s commitment to providing quality healthcare and promoting the health and well-being of our community. We will continue our mission of transforming lives, both through technological innovation and human care,” he stressed.

The Robotic Surgery Program in Orthopedics at ULS of Coimbra resulted from an investment in the General Hospital (Covões) of two million euros in acquiring the Robotic Arm-Assisted Surgery System and an additional two million euros for upgrading image navigation systems.
