“We had the opportunity to reiterate our deep condemnation of the Russian attack on the city of Sumy,” stated Paulo Rangel, speaking to journalists in Luxembourg during a ministerial meeting.
The Foreign Minister described Moscow’s attack as “particularly cruel” as it coincided with the Christian religious celebrations of Palm Sunday.
“Even at a negotiating time, a highly significant moment for Ukraine and Russia,” the Russian forces’ attack shows the Kremlin’s desire to “continue the conflict,” Rangel argued.
“It is an unacceptable barbarity,” he condemned.
The Portuguese diplomat insisted on the necessity of continuing military and diplomatic support for Ukraine, as well as maintaining sanctions against Russia to try to curtail its military capabilities.
A Russian bombardment in the city of Sumy on Sunday resulted in at least 34 fatalities, marking one of the largest in recent months.
