‘Unbridled Hope’ premieres on the 25th at the return of the Women’s School.

‘Esperança desmedida’, a creation by Rui Malheiro based on an original text by Ilda Teixeira, marks the 79th production by Escola de Mulheres — Oficina de Teatro, which celebrates its 30th anniversary this year. The company was co-founded by Fernanda Lapa.

Ilda Teixeira, an actress with the Trigo Limpo/Associação Cultural e Recreativa de Tondela, has been involved in over 40 theater productions since 1999 and also engages in programming and training within the field.

Escola de Mulheres describes ‘Esperança desmedida’ as “a passage of bodies and memories intertwined with survival itself.”

The play addresses themes of migration “across time, repeating ceaselessly,” and borders raised to “protect some.”

‘Esperança desmedida’ is a reflection on migration, loss, and resistance, the company states.

Founded in 1995 by Fernanda Lapa, Cucha Carvalheiro, Isabel Medina, Marta Lapa, Cristina Carvalhal, Aida Soutullo, and Conceição Cabrita, Escola de Mulheres — Oficina de Teatro focuses on highlighting women’s contributions in theater and promoting new dramaturgies on female themes and writing. Their performances take place in the Sala de Teatro of Clube Estefânia.

Produced by Escola de Mulheres, ‘Esperança desmedida’ runs until November 9, with shows from Wednesday to Saturday at 21:00 and on Sunday at 18:00.

The cast includes Catarina Rabaça, Marta Lapa, and Vítor Alves da Costa, in a collectively created performance.

Rui Malheiro undertakes the dramaturgy and direction, with original music by Luísa Vieira and lighting design by Paulo Santos.
