The figure for the previous week was revised upward, increasing by about one thousand compared to previously announced, to 248,000.
The four-week moving average, which is a more reliable indicator of the performance of the U.S. labor market, rose to 240,250, “an increase of 5,000 compared to the revised average of the previous week,” it was noted.
With this increase, the four-week average reached the highest value since the period ending August 26, 2023.
In the week ending May 31, the most recent data available, 1,956,000 people were receiving unemployment benefits in the United States, representing an increase of 54,000 compared to the previous week.
This also marked multi-year highs, reaching the highest value since November 2021 (1,970,000 people).
The four-week moving average rose by 19,750 people, reaching 1,914,500 beneficiaries, the highest value also since November 2021.
