Unemployment benefit recipients rise 2% in May

Compared to the same period last year, there was an increase of 3,717 beneficiaries, marking a rise of 2%.

In relation to the previous month, there was a decrease of 8,410 beneficiaries in May, equivalent to a 4.3% drop, according to the summary from the Strategy and Planning Office (GEP) of the Ministry of Labor, Solidarity and Social Security.

The number of beneficiaries of unemployment benefits has been declining for three consecutive months, after reaching a peak in February, which was the highest since January 2022.

Regarding unemployment benefits, May saw a year-on-year increase of 3.7% in the number of beneficiaries (an additional 5,345), totaling 150,995. Compared to the previous month, there was a 3.3% decrease (5,088 fewer beneficiaries).

“The average monthly amount of unemployment benefits in May was 699.99 euros, representing a positive annual variation of 7.8%,” the GEP notes.

On the other hand, the number of beneficiaries of the initial social unemployment benefit decreased by 10.9% compared to the same month the previous year (861 fewer benefits processed) and fell by 21.6% compared to April (a decrease of 1,940 beneficiaries), totaling 7,038.

As for the subsequent social unemployment benefit, this covered 21,190 beneficiaries in May, corresponding to a year-on-year reduction of 1.3% (274 fewer beneficiaries) and a monthly decrease of 1.1% (241 fewer beneficiaries).

As has been the trend, unemployment benefits were mainly requested by women, accounting for 107,442 female beneficiaries out of the total (42.7%).
