Unemployment falls by 3.8% in June and reaches its lowest value in almost 2 years.

According to data released today by the Instituto do Emprego e Formação Profissional (IEFP), at the end of June, “293,488 unemployed individuals were registered with the employment services of the Mainland and Autonomous Regions, a number representing 66.1% of a total of 443,860 job applications.”

This is 11,458 fewer people registered at job centers compared to June 2024. This marks the lowest figure since July 2023, that is, in almost two years, when 284,330 people were registered at job centers, according to available data analysis.

The reduction was driven by “those registered for less than 12 months (-11,812), those seeking a new job (-9,916), and those over 25 years of age (-8,345),” reveals the IEFP.

In a month-on-month comparison, compared to May, this represents 7,417 fewer people registered at job centers. It is the fifth consecutive month of decline, since February.

Regarding the most significant professional groups, compared to the same period last year, “a decrease in unemployment is observed in the professional groups of ‘administrative staff’ (-14.7%), ‘technicians and intermediate-level professions’ (-10.7%), and ‘qualified workers in industry, construction, and artisans’ (-7%)”, notes the institute.

Conversely, an increase in unemployment was recorded “in the professional group of ‘unskilled workers’ (+4.6%)”, it adds.

Regionally, registered unemployment decreased in all regions compared to the same period last year, with the most pronounced decline again recorded in the autonomous region of Madeira (17%).

In a month-on-month comparison, in June “a decrease was observed in all regions, with the overall reduction in unemployment around -2.5%,” indicates the IEFP.

At the end of June, job offers yet to be fulfilled reached 19,306 in employment services across the country, corresponding to an increase in available job offers in the annual analysis (+6,363; +49.2%) and compared to the previous month (+1,173; +6.5%).
