According to data released today by the Institute of Employment and Vocational Training (IEFP), at the end of August, 301,638 individuals were registered as unemployed across the mainland and autonomous regions, accounting for 69.5% of a total of 433,901 job applications.
This figure represents a decrease of 11,783 individuals registered at employment centers compared to August 2024. Contributing to this decline in absolute terms were those registered for less than 12 months (-15,335), those seeking new employment (-11,350), and individuals over 25 years old (-10,341).
Compared to July, there are 8,813 more people registered at employment centers.
This marks the first month of increase after six consecutive months of decline, following July when, similar to the previous month, the number of registrations at employment centers reached the lowest level in two years.
Among professional groups, there was a decrease in “farmers and skilled agricultural, fishing, and forestry workers” (-15.8%), “administrative staff” (-13.2%), “technicians and mid-level professions” (-9.9%), and “skilled workers in industry, construction, and craftsmen” (-6.7%), noted the IEFP.
Conversely, there was an increase in unemployment among “legislators, senior officials, directors, and executive managers” (+16.4%) and “unskilled workers” (+3.8%).
Regionally, and similar to July, registered unemployment decreased in August across all regions except Alentejo, with the most significant decline in the autonomous region of Madeira (-18.4%) compared to the same period last year.
However, in terms of month-on-month comparison, August saw increases in all regions except Algarve and the Azores, the institute adds.
By the end of August, there were 18,759 job vacancies across employment services nationwide, reflecting an increase in listed vacancies year-on-year (+6,569; +53.9%) but a decrease compared to the previous month (-255; -1.3%).
