Unemployment rate falls to 6.5% in January

The unemployment rate fell 0.5 percentage points to 6.5% in January year-on-year, unchanged from December 2023, according to provisional data released today by INE.

“The unemployment rate stood at 6.5%, the same as in the previous month and 0.1 percentage points lower than three months earlier and 0.5 percentage points lower than in the same month in 2023,” says the National Statistics Institute (INE) in its “Monthly Employment and Unemployment Estimates” for January.

There were 347,000 unemployed that month, 0.4% more than in December 2023 and 1.5% and 5.9% less than three months earlier and the same month in 2023, respectively.
