Unemployment rate in Spain rises to 11.36% in the first quarter

Unemployment rose this quarter across all sectors: Services (up 124,900), Industry (21,100), Construction (13,700), and Agriculture (4,500), according to a statement from the National Institute of Statistics (INE).

Comparatively, over the past year, the number of unemployed has decreased in Spain by 188,700 people.

In the first quarter of the year, Spain’s active population increased by 101,200 individuals, reaching 24,554,500.

Spain maintains the highest unemployment rate in the European Union (EU).

According to the most recent official data, released on April 1, the unemployment rate dropped to 6.1% in the eurozone and 5.7% in the European Union (EU) in February.

Poland (2.6%), Malta, and the Czech Republic (2.7% each) had the lowest unemployment rates in February, while Spain (10.4%), Sweden (9.0%), and Greece (8.6%) recorded the highest.

In Portugal, the indicator stood at 6.4%, compared to 6.5% in February 2024 and 6.3% in January.
