UNESCO declares Nietzsche’s legacy Documentary Heritage of Humanity

The collection of manuscripts, notes, letters, and books that comprises the legacy is housed in the archives of Goethe and Schiller, as well as in the library of Duchess Anna Amalia, the foundation revealed.

The philosopher, poet, and composer is recognized as one of the most influential authors and thinkers of modern times.

Nietzsche was born in Röcken, currently within the state of Saxony-Anhalt, in 1844, and passed away on August 25, 1900, in Weimar, Thuringia.

Many of his works, such as “Thus Spoke Zarathustra,” continue to provoke debate, and during the National Socialist era, his ideas were manipulated for propagandistic purposes.

In this book, he introduced the term ‘Ubermensch,’ which translates from German as “overman” or “superman.” In his view, it was humanity’s task to produce a being more developed than itself, a term rich with spiritual and biological significance.

“Nietzsche, early on, reflected the profound transformations of modernity; his manuscripts are the embodiment of an intellectual openness desperately needed in today’s times,” stated Christian Tischner, the Minister of Culture for the German region of Thuringia.

The philosopher of the phrase “God is dead,” which examines the impact and the aftermath of the Enlightenment on the centrality of the concept of God in Western European civilization, with its predominantly Christian character, is known particularly for his critical stance against religion and morality.
