A statement expressing deep sorrow has highlighted the work of the jurist in advocating for universal access to clean water and sanitation. The note recalls her pioneering role in 2008 as the United Nations Special Rapporteur in this field, contributing significantly to recognizing the right to water as a fundamental human right.

UNICEF Portugal, in a released statement, praised the strong relationship between the jurist and the organization, emphasizing their shared belief that access to potable water and sanitation is vital for children’s health, dignity, and future. They remembered her energy, rigor, and empathy, which inspired many generations of professionals and human rights advocates.

The work of Catarina de Albuquerque was also praised by the Public Prosecutor’s Office, which, in a note on its website, recalled that in 2014, she chaired the Water and Sanitation for All partnership, committed to identifying deficiencies in water access and creating sanitation networks.

NOVA School of Law, where Catarina de Albuquerque served as president of the Faculty Council, issued a statement praising her leadership, as well as her work, vision, and dedication, which inspired the academic community.

The death of Catarina de Albuquerque on Tuesday was announced by the Portuguese Association for Victim Support, where she was vice-president between 2013 and 2019. Her contributions were recognized with the Human Rights Gold Medal and the Order of Merit.
