Union wants new INEM president only after the technical committee’s report.

“The current Executive Board has been in place for just over a year [and still in an interim regime], and it seems a bit premature to make another change without the technical committee’s report or the new organic law of INEM,” stated the president of STEPH.

In an interview, Rui Lázaro mentioned that any decision made now, without those documents completed, “feeds the instability that INEM has been experiencing.”

Two weeks ago, he expressed his expectation for the president of the National Institute of Medical Emergency (INEM) “to have done more” and highlighted the need for measures to reorganize the service.

Rui Lázaro recalled that structural measures, including the reduction of triage times, were expected to be implemented in the first quarter of 2025.

“The last schedule we received from the INEM president was in February, and it was supposed to begin in March. At least six months without news of this implementation, and without the INEM president providing a justification,” lamented Lázaro after a meeting with the authorities.

Sérgio Dias Janeiro was appointed by the Government last July as interim president of INEM for a 60-day term following a vacancy in the position.

Meanwhile, last week, reports indicated that Dr. Luís Cabral, who leads the medical emergency services in the Azores, is the leading candidate to succeed Sérgio Janeiro.
