University of Évora exhibits ‘outside the doors’ 21 works from its artistic collection

The collective exhibition, titled “ÉUMAVEZ. Artes e Visualidade na Universidade de Évora”, will be available for viewing at the Centro de Arte e Cultura da Fundação Eugénio de Almeida (FEA), with the opening scheduled for 16:30 as part of the University Day program, observed on Saturday.

The FEA stated in a release that works by António Areal, António Charrua, António Palolo, Carlos Calvet, Cruzeiro Seixas, Graça Morais, and João Cutileiro will be showcased.

Also featured in the initiative are artists Júlio [Reis Pereira], Malangatana, Maluda, Mário Cesariny, Nikias Skapinakis, Paula Rego, Raquel Gonçalves, Susana Piteira, and Victor Belém.

Curated by Filipe Rocha da Silva, the exhibition, which will remain open to the public until March 1, 2026, is also part of the celebrations marking the 50th anniversary of the re-establishment of the University of Évora (UÉ), as noted by the vice-rector for Culture and Community of the Alentejo institution, Ana Telles, today.

“This anniversary represents our desire to open our collections to the public. We have a large collection of artworks that belong to the university or are exhibited here, and most of the time, these wonderful pieces have been kept closed and without any musealization,” emphasized the vice-rector.

Therefore, according to Ana Telles, this “genuine partnership between the university, the FEA, and the Museu Nacional Frei Manuel do Cenáculo (MNFMC) – in Évora, which lent one of the pieces – aims to introduce this collection to the community.”

In total, the Sala Rostrum of the Centro de Arte e Cultura da FEA will feature “21 paintings, sculptures, and drawings,” while the Atrium space of the same venue will host “the historical and documentary component” of the exhibition, which includes three videos.

“The exhibition features three documentary videos with individuals who have or had a particularly significant connection to the history of UÉ’s artistic collection,” said the vice-rector, citing former professors of the Alentejo academy José Alberto Machado and António Cândido Franco, as well as Arlete Brito da Silva from Galeria 111 in Lisbon.

According to the FEA, this aspect of the exhibition offers insights into the historical and documentary research, including biographical materials donated by an artist to the university, with the video testimonies providing context on the origin and meaning of the presented works.

Vice-Rector Ana Telles stressed that it is the first time these pieces are exhibited outside UÉ and musealized, with the aim of “opening the university to the community and enhancing the artistic collection” of the institution, which comprises “around 70 works.”

“It’s a way to open the doors and invite the community to enjoy the university’s cultural production, especially in one of the most distinguished exhibition spaces [the Centro de Arte e Cultura da FEA] in the city, the region, and the country,” she argued.
