Maria João Horta addressed the topic “Education for the Media in the Age of AI” during the “Operation 7 Days with the Media 2025” event. She emphasized that using artificial intelligence in education requires a diligent approach to these tools and the responsibility to critically evaluate the technologies introduced by multinational companies. According to Horta, these factors are essential for developing effective AI-based educational solutions.
The representative of the Directorate-General for Education (DGE) highlighted the importance of adapting learning environments, promoting active methodologies, and implementing student-centered strategies to personalize learning paths and effectively leverage AI in education.
To enhance learning outcomes and develop digital skills among students, the deputy director stressed that digital environments in schools must cultivate “digital skills, critical thinking, digital responsibility, and digital well-being.” She emphasized the aim of fostering digital citizenship, stating, “A school in the digital age is a school in the age of diversity.”
Maria João Horta also discussed the need to balance digital and non-digital resources, maintaining a critical perspective on digital technologies, particularly artificial intelligence.
Among the recommendations for promoting digital well-being in schools, the DGE representative highlighted the importance of “establishing a clear stance on the use of devices in schools through participatory processes” and “promoting digital empowerment initiatives for all members of the educational community,” with an emphasis on developing digital skills.
The “Operation 7 Days with the Media” is an annual national initiative aimed at raising awareness of the role and place of media in daily life. This year’s central theme, “Artificial Intelligence and Critical Thinking,” is encapsulated by the phrase “AI, I think!”
