A 42-year-old man has been arrested by the Polícia Judiciária (PJ) on suspicion of sexual abuse of a person incapable of resistance. The incident occurred in Figueira da Foz, Coimbra district.
The crime took place earlier this month at a Private Institution of Social Solidarity (IPSS) where both the suspect and the 53-year-old victim are institutionalized, according to a statement released on Wednesday.
The statement explained, “Exploiting the special vulnerability of the victim, who suffers from a profound mental disorder, the aggressor subjected her to abusive sexual practices.”
The investigation was initiated following a report from the IPSS that led to an inquiry and subsequent evidence collection procedures, ultimately resulting in the suspect’s arrest.
The detainee will appear for an initial judicial interrogation to determine appropriate coercive measures.
