The funeral ceremonies for the esteemed writer Mario Vargas Llosa have commenced. The procession began from his residence in the Barranco district of Lima, Peru, where the 2010 Nobel Prize in Literature laureate lived, proceeding to an undisclosed location for private farewells with family and close friends.
The funeral cortege left the home of the Peruvian at 4:00 PM (10:00 PM in Lisbon), accompanied by two flower-laden cars. Many admirers seized the moment to bid farewell in the main streets of the neighborhood.
Until the departure of the cortege, Vargas Llosa’s remains were kept at home in complete privacy.
The news of the 89-year-old writer’s death was announced this Monday by his children, Álvaro, Morgana, and Gonzalo, who ensured the funeral proceedings would align with the instructions left by the Nobel laureate.

The family has announced that there will be no public ceremony, and the remains of the Peruvian, born in Arequipa in 1936, will be cremated as per his wishes.
“Our mother, our children, and we ourselves believe we will have the space and privacy needed to say goodbye to him among family and in the company of his closest friends,” added the siblings in a letter published on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter).
