The EGEAC – Lisboa Cultura has announced the launch of the centennial celebrations for the Variedades Theatre with a campaign inviting people to share historical memorabilia such as photographs, show programs, tickets, costumes, props, and personal stories related to the venue.
The collection of this archive will take place until January 31, 2026, aiming to create an exhibition that year featuring real objects, images, and testimonies, as a tribute to the collective memory of this Lisbon stage, according to the municipal company.
“The greatest legacy of the Variedades Theatre is undoubtedly its ability to reflect the Lisbon spirit,” stated Joaquim René, director of the Variedades Theatre and Capitólio, in the same communication.
For nearly a century, the Variedades has been a stage for emotions, satires, laughter, social commentary, culture, and moments of pure joy. It has always been a popular, democratic theater—accessible, lively, and open-minded.
Reopened in October 2024, the Variedades now plays a renewed role but remains true to its origins, according to the theater’s director, who described it as a meeting point for generations and artistic genres, as well as a space for creation and sharing, where tradition and innovation coexist.
Those with memories of the Variedades Theatre can share them by emailing me****************@***ac.pt or arranging a visit through this address.
The EGEAC – Lisboa Cultura concluded that loans, digital contributions (scans or reproductions), or donations of objects are accepted.
