Vendas Novas: IGAS rejects link between patient’s death and INEM strike

“It is not possible to establish a causal link between the delay and the fatal outcome observed as the chances of survival would be quite limited, almost null, given the patient’s clinical condition,” concluded IGAS.

The case involves the death of a 73-year-old resident of Vendas Novas on October 31, 2024, which prompted an inquiry into the service provided by the CODU of the National Institute for Medical Emergency (INEM).

The inquiry was initiated on May 27, and the report was finalized last Wednesday.

IGAS has concluded investigations into seven of the 12 deaths recorded during the INEM technicians’ strike concerning overtime, which began on October 30 and was suspended on November 7, coinciding with a general public administration strike on November 4.

The Public Prosecutor’s Office has six inquiries under investigation concerning deaths occurring during the INEM strike.

The report was forwarded to the Board of Directors of INEM, the Board of Administration of the Local Health Unit of Central Alentejo, the Public Prosecutor’s Office, the Prosecutor’s Office of Montemor-o-Novo where a judicial inquiry is ongoing, and the Ministry of Health.
