Ventura: “I regret that people who should be in prison give interviews”

On Sunday, Chega leader André Ventura was questioned about his ongoing dispute with Isaltino Morais, the Mayor of Oeiras.

Speaking to journalists in Viseu, Ventura remarked: “I’ve said everything there is to say. The only thing I regret is that people who should be in prison are seen on television. We have José Sócrates giving interviews, we have Isaltino… Soon, we might have a terrorist group leader giving interviews on TV, speaking casually.”

Ventura reiterated comments made on Saturday after Isaltino Morais labeled him a “little monster.” “He is right. I am the monster going after them one by one until they pay what they owe the country,” Ventura stated.

Ventura cited the case of José Sócrates, who “has not even been tried and is on television strolling about.” “Either we realize that the country must stop offering these comedic examples, or we won’t progress. This is what concerns people: that these individuals continue to be at the forefront as if nothing is amiss. They are corrupt; they are thieves.”

The exchange commenced earlier in the week and intensified over the past 48 hours when, in a video shared on social media, the Oeiras Mayor accused Ventura of being “the reincarnation of the worst the system has,” labeling him a “compulsive liar” and “a little monster representing the worst of the system.”

“Dr. André Ventura lies shamelessly and brazenly. People think it’s talent,” Morais asserted.

In response, André Ventura later posted a video on social media stating, “I understand this crowd is very afraid” that his party will win the elections due to “what will happen to them.”

He elaborated: “Indeed, in a sense, I am a monster. I am the terror of the corrupt who have been robbing us all these years and who continue to rob us.”

Ventura reiterated his stance that Isaltino Morais belongs in “prison” and argued that the “country is fed up” with those who “have always stolen and gone unpunished.”
