According to the National Authority for Emergency and Civil Protection, temperatures are expected to reach 40 degrees in the interior of the southern region, as well as in the Tejo and Douro valleys.
The Authority cites data from the Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere, highlighting a relative humidity of air below 30% in most of the territory, “with weak nighttime recovery.”
A gradual increase in fire risk is expected, “with favorable conditions for the occurrence and spread of rural fires, as well as increased difficulty in suppression actions, especially in the North, Center, and Algarve regions,” the authority warned in a statement.
Burning and the use of fire for food cooking are prohibited in all rural areas, except outside critical zones and in locations duly authorized for this purpose.
On days of very high and maximum fire risk, the use of brush cutters, chainsaws, and shredders is also prohibited.
