The Air Force released a video on Friday showing the moment a German woman was rescued from the cruise ship Europa 2, off the coast of Montijo, early Thursday morning.
In a statement, the Air Force reported it had rescued a woman “in need of urgent medical care aboard the Europa 2 ship,” which was “sailing about 64 kilometers southwest of Montijo.”
“The rescue was carried out using an EH-101 Merlin helicopter from Squadron 751 – ‘Pumas’, after the Lisbon Rescue Coordination Center (RCC – Lisbon) received the alert about the need to recover the woman who was suffering from a broken leg,” the statement read.
After the rescue, the woman received the “necessary healthcare” from the aeronautical nurse and was transported to the Aeródromo de Trânsito N.º 1 in Portela.
On Thursday, the Portuguese Navy also announced it had coordinated “a search and rescue operation for a German national passenger on board the Europa 2 passenger ship.”
Following a medical assessment conducted by the Urgent Patient Observation Center (CODUMAR), a medical rescue operation was determined in coordination with the Portuguese Air Force.
The German woman was subsequently transported to a hospital in Lisbon by the National Institute of Medical Emergency (INEM).
In a notice sent to newsrooms, the Navy emphasized its commitment to providing continuous response in the maritime areas under national responsibility to incidents that may occur, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
