Vieira “CMVM does not supervise any aspect” about elections at Benfica

The Comissão do Mercado de Valores Mobiliários (CMVM) clarified this Friday to Notícias ao Minuto that it “does not supervise” any issues related to the elections for the board of directors of Sport Lisboa e Benfica’s (SLB) SAD, following concerns regarding the candidacy of Luís Filipe Vieira, whose name has been implicated in several legal proceedings.

The market regulator explains that the club’s SAD must, however, provide information to shareholders about the general assembly where the appointment for the board of directors will take place.

“In this case, it is important to note that the CMVM does not oversee any aspect related to the election of the club’s board of directors. Regarding the SAD, upon the announcement of the general assembly meeting for shareholders, particularly for the appointment to the management bodies of a listed issuer, the necessary prior information must be provided to the market, as legally required (Article 21-I and following of the Securities Code and Article 289 of the Commercial Companies Code).

Furthermore, the CMVM clarifies that the “information provided to the market concerning the boards of listed companies or relevant legal proceedings must meet the requirements set out in Article 7 of the Securities Code. In particular, the information must be complete, true, clear, objective, current, and lawful.”

In an interview given this week, it is recalled that Luís Filipe Vieira stated regarding the legal proceedings he is involved in that he has never harmed the State and has “full confidence in justice.”

Moreover, he mentioned that he believes he will also be the president of the Benfica SAD, indicating no obstacles from the CMVM.

The former president of the eagles confirmed his intention to run in the October elections and pointed a finger at Rui Costa. Martim Mayer has already responded, while Cristóvão Carvalho, João Diogo Manteigas, and João Noronha Lopes remain silent, as does the current Benfica leader.
