A 39-year-old woman was identified and detained on Saturday for attempting to introduce drugs into the Coimbra Prison.
The arrest followed a report about the “possibility of introducing illicit substances in that same prison facility by a visitor,” detailed the Polícia Judiciária (PJ) in a statement sent to newsrooms on Sunday.
“It was confirmed that she had approximately 100 grams of narcotic substance in her possession, intended for delivery to an inmate,” the authorities added.
The woman was also subjected to a body search, during which “substances suspected of being narcotics, concealed” were detected. Subsequent tests confirmed approximately 50 grams of cocaine and 50 grams of heroin.
The suspect, who has been charged with aggravated drug trafficking, will be presented to judicial authorities for a preliminary judicial interrogation and application of coercive measures.
This was an operation by the PJ, through the Central Directorate, in close collaboration with the Prison Services.
