Voters of Cabreiro in Arcos de Valdevez return to the polls on Sunday

The municipal elections on October 12 resulted in a tie between the PSD and the Todos Por Cabreiro movement, with each securing 120 votes for the position of president of the Junta de Freguesia.

In a statement to Lusa, the mayor of Arcos de Valdevez, in the Viana do Castelo district, Olegário Gonçalves (PSD), expressed hopes that the re-election process will “proceed normally, in a democratic manner, without any conflicts or battles between the two lists.”

According to Olegário Gonçalves, no conflicts occurred during the October 12 elections, but with this being a unique election, members of the lists might be more anxious or nervous.

“It is advisable for everyone to remain calm, as we are talking about the population of a parish also located within the Peneda-Gerês National Park (PNPG). We should maintain serenity and review the results at the conclusion,” added the mayor, who was elected for his first term, despite having been part of the local council for several years.

Olegário Gonçalves, who follows the current Secretary of State for the Environment, achieved 54.76% against 19.84% for PS and 14.29% for Chega.
