At 2:45 PM Lisbon time, the Dow Jones index rose 2.50% to 40,153.68 points, while the tech-heavy Nasdaq climbed 3.92% to 16,932.25 points.
The broad S&P 500 index was at 5,422.23 points, marking a gain of 2.55%.
The Chinese government today urged the United States to “stop applying pressure” and demonstrate respect if they truly wish to resolve their trade disputes with China through negotiations and dialogue.
“If the United States persists in this tariff war, China will continue to respond until the end. If they want to negotiate, the door is open. But if they truly wish to negotiate, they must stop exerting maximum pressure and engage in dialogue based on equality, respect, and mutual benefit,” stated Chinese diplomatic spokesperson Guo Jiakun at a press conference.
These comments follow U.S. President Donald Trump’s expression of optimism on Tuesday regarding the potential for the U.S. and China to reach a trade agreement.
