This opening of the New York stock exchange came shortly after the announcement from the U.S. Department of Labor regarding unemployment claims data.
According to this government department, the four-week average of unemployment benefit claims, a more reliable indicator of the U.S. labor market performance, increased to 240,250, reaching the highest level since August 2023.
Simultaneously, the number of beneficiaries of this type of support rose to 1.97 million, the highest level since November 2021.
The stability of the labor market is usually a guarantee of greater stability for investors.
The session also began just hours after the crash of an Air India Boeing 787 in Ahmedabad, India, which was carrying over 200 people.
Among the passengers on board the plane, 169 were Indian citizens, 53 British, one Canadian, and seven Portuguese, according to the airline’s information.
On Wednesday, the Dow Jones closed unchanged, the Nasdaq lost 0.27%, and the S&P 500 fell 0.50%.
