
At 2:45 PM Lisbon time, the Dow Jones index fell 0.07% to 44,373.82 points, while the tech-heavy Nasdaq rose 0.18% to 20,448.44 points.
The broad S&P 500 index advanced 0.04% to 6,232.33 points.
On Monday, the Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 0.94%, the Nasdaq dropped 0.92%, and the more comprehensive S&P 500 lost 0.79%.
The U.S. has extended the deadline for imposing new tariffs until August 1st. Meanwhile, letters detailing new tariffs have already been sent to some partners, such as Japan and South Korea, regarding the tariffs imposed unilaterally.
South Korea stated today that it interprets the letter sent by Washington, announcing the imposition of “reciprocal” tariffs of 25% starting August 1st, as a tacit extension of the negotiation period and called an emergency meeting to outline its response strategy.
“Financial markets reacted optimistically to the news of higher U.S. tariffs,” wrote Chris Turner, global head of markets at ING, adding, “presumably, the view now is that there are more deals to be made before the final deadline (August 1st).”
