Wall Street starts the week in negative territory

By 2:45 PM Lisbon time, the Dow Jones was down 0.26%, at 45,513.17 points, while the Nasdaq technology index fell 0.32%, to 21,428.51 points.

Meanwhile, the broad S&P 500 index declined by 0.26% to 6,450.05 points.

On Friday, the Dow Jones index (+1.89%) reached its highest level since December, reaching 45,631.74 points, while the Nasdaq gained 1.88%, to 21,496 points, and the S&P 500 index advanced 1.52%, to 6,466 points.

This movement followed a statement from the Fed Chairman, indicating that the U.S. is “approaching the moment” when it may be necessary to lower interest rates to support employment, although he warned that new tariffs could pressure inflation.

In the traditional opening speech at the annual Jackson Hole symposium, Jerome Powell added that the Fed is in a “delicate situation,” as the new tariffs imposed by the U.S. administration are simultaneously impacting consumer prices, with the risk of reigniting inflation.
