At 3:09 PM (Lisbon time), the Dow Jones index increased by 0.25% to 44,204.37 points, while the Nasdaq technology index decreased by 0.30% to 20,307.81 points.
Meanwhile, the broader S&P 500 index fell 0.09% to 6,199.40 points.
On Monday, the New York stock exchange closed on a high note, with the Dow Jones rising by 0.63%.
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz argued today that discussions regarding a potential European nuclear shield are so distant that priority should be given to maintaining the United States’ commitment to Europe’s defense.
In a press conference in Berlin with Luxembourg’s Prime Minister Luc Frieden, the conservative leader stated that “everything must be done to maintain the United States’ nuclear involvement for years, if not decades.”
Merz noted that aside from the discussions with France, there is no concrete initiative yet on a European shield.
According to the chancellor, creating a nuclear deterrent force independent of the United States is “a task with a very, very long-term perspective.”
