Warning for Madeira due to the passage of depression Claudia

The effects of the approaching depression named Claudia will be felt in Madeira indirectly due to the passage of tropical air, the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere (IPMA) reported today.

IPMA indicates that depression Claudia will have a “significant impact” on Madeira from early Wednesday morning until late Thursday morning, with “persistent and occasionally heavy rainfall” expected during this period, along with thunder, particularly along the southern coast and mountainous regions of Madeira.

The authority estimates accumulated rainfall during “six hours, notably in the early hours and morning of the 12th (Wednesday)” to range between “40 to 60 millimeters, with temporary amounts of 20 to 30 millimeters in an hour.”

“Due to this situation, meteorological warnings for precipitation, at yellow and orange levels, have already been issued for the Madeira archipelago,” the IPMA statement reads.

Regarding the wind, it is expected to intensify up to 40 kilometers per hour, with gusts reaching 90 kilometers per hour in Madeira’s high areas.

As for maritime conditions, waves are expected to reach up to 4.5 meters.

The orange warning is the second most severe in a four-level scale.
