“Water that Unites” strategy in public consultation until April 25th

The strategic plan, unveiled by the government on March 9 in Coimbra, can be accessed on the participa.pt portal.

As of 2:30 PM today, the initiative “Água que une,” spearheaded by the Ministries of Agriculture and Environment, recorded 13 participations.

This strategy, built on the pillars of efficiency, resilience, and intelligence, is designed to span 15 years. It aims to increase by over 1,000 million cubic meters (m3) the available water for all uses across the national territory.

The government’s current data indicates that Portugal annually has approximately 51,000 million m3 of water available. Of this, an annual 4,324 million m3 is extracted.

By 2040, a reduction of 6% in water availability is anticipated, alongside a consumption increase of 26%.

The “Água que une” strategy includes programs focused on reducing water loss, reusing treated water, innovating and digitalizing the water cycle, rehabilitating rivers and streams, enhancing storage capacity, optimizing hydro-agricultural projects, managing water supply to the industrial hub of Sines, and increasing water resilience in Alentejo.

Regional investments are distributed as follows: 479 million euros for the Tejo and Oeste regions, 448 million euros for the North, 267 million euros for the Vouga, Mondego, and Lis areas, 156 million euros for Alentejo, and 126 million euros for the Algarve.
