“Where is the wealth that is being created going?”

The communist leader commented on the forecasts released today by the Bank of Portugal, which significantly lowered the estimate for the growth of the Portuguese economy this year, from 2.3% to 1.6%, in the June Economic Bulletin released this Friday.

Speaking on the sidelines of a public session about the northeastern region of Trás-os-Montes, Paulo Raimundo told journalists that he was not surprised, stating that this has been the average over the last two decades, with exceptions in “one or two years,” such as during the pandemic, and he believes it will continue to follow this trend.

“(…) As long as we maintain this economic model based on low wages, with immense pressure on the majority and ample tax benefits for large companies… There is reason for concern regarding these economic growth forecasts. But while we are predicting and under pressure, banks are making 13 million euros in daily profits,” the official stated.

Paulo Raimundo expressed concern, questioning: “Where is the wealth being created going?”

The secretary-general of the PCP spoke in Mirandela, in the Bragança district, at the former railway station, now transformed into a cultural space. This occasion also marked the launch of the campaign for the regional municipal elections, with the presence of several known candidates.
