Will tuition fees rise? Student association promises to “respond in the streets”

“We do not accept this attempt to increase tuition fees, nor any future increases, and we assure that if the Government does not reverse its intentions of raising the tuition fee as part of the 2026 State Budget, students will respond in the streets, fighting, united,” the association stated in a communiqué.

The Government will unfreeze, from the academic year 2026/2027, the tuition fees for undergraduate courses, which have not changed since 2020, increasing from 697 to 710 euros, announced the Minister of Education today.

According to Fernando Alexandre, the update of undergraduate tuition fees, based on the 2025 inflation rate, will be included in the draft State Budget Law for 2026 to take effect in the 2026/2027 academic year.

Justifying the measure, the minister stated that the freeze “benefits students with higher incomes more,” arguing that tuition fees are essential for higher education institutions to pursue “strategies of excellence.”

“To this Government, we assure that we will not give you rest in the face of this terroristic proposal, and we are confident that with the unity of the student associative movement, indispensable in the current moment, we will prevent the increase in tuition fees and move towards their end,” reacted the Student Association of FCSH of UNL.
