Wine production in the Algarve down 10%. The weather is to blame.

“We anticipate a decrease that could reach 10%, approximately 200,000 liters, compared to the previous campaign. The reasons for this reduction are linked to unexpected rains, which promoted the emergence of diseases,” stated Sara Silva to the Lusa news agency.

The Algarve Wine Commission, which certifies, controls, and promotes wines from the Faro district, is organizing the second edition of the “Algarve Wine Session” today at a hotel in Vilamoura, Loulé, featuring 30 producers to showcase Algarve wines.

The event, which is a one-day showcase of Algarve wines, includes wine tastings, demonstrations, lectures, and classes with experts, and is open to the public.

According to the president of the CVA, last year was “extraordinary for the sector,” with a record production of about two million liters of wine, “the highest recorded” in the region.

Currently, the Algarve has 60 registered producers of certified wine with the geographic indication “Algarve,” operating over a total area of about 1,400 hectares, of which around 800 are directly controlled by the Commission.

“All these hectares are directly controlled by us, and that’s where the grapes for certified wine production come from,” explained Sara Silva, highlighting the sector’s significant growth over the last decade.

“In 2017, we had about 30 producers, and now we have registered 60. There was a doubling within eight years, which represents great dynamism of new economic agents, about four to five new operators each year,” she added.

According to Sara Silva, Algarve wine exports vary year to year, representing on average between 12% and 15% of the total production volume, with the largest impact in the American markets – the United States and Brazil – and Europe.

“Europe has a great influence due to its relationship with tourism source markets and because many of our producers are of European origin, having privileged channels to place their wines in these markets,” she emphasized.

The Algarve Wine Commission is the entity responsible for the certification and promotion of wines with the geographic indication “Algarve” and the denominations of origin Lagos, Portimão, Lagoa, and Tavira.
