“Without the 25th of November, maybe we wouldn’t have the democracy we have today.”

Presidential candidate Henrique Gouveia e Melo commented on Friday regarding the 50th anniversary celebrations of November 25, during which the government approved the creation of a committee for the commemorations.

Speaking to journalists in the Algarve, Gouveia e Melo stated the date is “important, although April 25 has a different dimension, as it marked the fall of a regime nearly 50 years old.”

“November 25 was the correction of a trajectory that could have once again led to a left-wing dictatorship, and I believe we should value both dates,” he noted, while emphasizing that April 25 “holds greater significance.”

“One cannot exist without the other. Without November 25, we might not have the democracy we enjoy today,” he concluded.

During his appearance at Fatacil – Fair of Handicrafts, Tourism, Commerce, and Industry in Lagoa, Gouveia e Melo criticized President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, asserting that he made “personal comments” when stating that his U.S. counterpart, Donald Trump, acted like a “Russian asset.”

“The external policy of the Portuguese State is the responsibility of the Government. Anyone in the Presidency – therefore, the President of the Republic – should not make personal comments as they represent the Portuguese State,” he explained.
